No Skeletal Specimens! Unique Exhibition Uncovered in Paintings and Subcultural Works

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art (Chuo-ku, Kobe) will hold the special exhibition “Dinosaurs: Imagination/Creation of a Lost World” from March 4.

This exhibition focuses on dinosaurs, which continue to fascinate people from children to adults. The exhibition will focus on dinosaurs and other paleontological art, from the bizarre reconstructions of the 19th century when dinosaurs were “discovered” to the 20th century paintings by Charles R. Knight and Zdenek Briand, who vividly depicted the dynamic dinosaurs, to today’s paleo-art based on cutting-edge research. The exhibition will overview the evolution of the image of dinosaurs and other ancient creatures.

The exhibition also includes approximately 150 works from around the world, including images of dinosaurs that have appeared in subcultures such as manga and toys, as well as in the realm of general fine art, or so-called fine art. The works cover the entire history of images of ancient creatures. The exhibition introduces the “inhabitants of the ancient world” who continue to stimulate people’s imagination.

During the exhibition, there will be a commemorative talk show by Shigeru Kuratani (Team Leader, RIKEN Center for Frontier Biosciences) and Hirokazu Tokugawa (Paleontologist and paleontology artist, who collaborated on the planning of this exhibition), as well as commentary sessions by the curators and events for children. ＜A word from the reporter:
Dinosaurs fascinate many people, from children to adults. When you look at illustrated books, you will find that what was once thought of as a dinosaur and what is thought of today are quite different! The works of art that were created with full of imagination before science revealed many things about dinosaurs are also worth seeing!
