Kobe is full of great cafes that perfectly match the atmosphere of the city, but today, you want to taste something a little special! I visited “Cafe Mamounia ” in the Toa West area (Chuo-ku, Kobe) on a day when I was in such a mood, and tried the new “Napoleon Pie,” a popular item that has been attracting a lot of attention on SNS.
The location is about a 5-minute walk from Motomachi Station. It features white walls that have recently been renovated, and there are many clothing and general stores in the area, making it a perfect location to stop by while strolling around.
When you open the door, you will find a space inspired by Middle Eastern interior design. The soothing tones of the colors and indirect lighting create a cozy atmosphere. In fact, the restaurant was established 23 years ago, and the author has fond memories of using it when he was a student.
The restaurant offers a wide variety of sweets and drinks during café hours, as well as lunch menu items such as omelette rice. In particular, the “Napoleon Pie” has become a specialty of Cafe Mamounia in recent years and is loved by many people, with many fans going out of their way to come from far away to taste it!
Two types of Napoleon Pie are always available: the standard strawberry pie, which is sold year-round, and a monthly special. The monthlyspecial features the fruit of the season, so you can enjoy a different flavor each month.
The first thing that struck me was the visual of the cake being served! The little cherries lined up in a row are so cute that you can’t help but take a handsome picture of them.
The crispy pie crust is layered and filled with a special cream mixture of custard and Chantilly cream.
When you put a knife in, the caramelized pie makes a crunchy sound. One bite of the pie is a perfect match between the savory pie crust and the smooth cream!
The Japanese cherries on top are soft and refreshing.
The sweet and sour taste of the American cherries in the filling tightens the overall flavor, and I was able to enjoy it until the last bite.
Although it may look large, thanks to its light texture, it was easily consumed.
Napoleon Pie” is still a rare treat in Kobe. It would be fun to order the strawberry and the monthly special with the person you went with and compare the different pies. In July, Napoleon Pie will be available in a summery fruit flavor, so be sure to check it out!
It was a handsome and satisfying looking and tasting item that will surely join the list of Kobe’s favorite sweets.
