From March 16, a special exhibition, “Sequel to the Nagoyadaru Frogs that Survived the Flood: A Survey of Frogs in Mabi-cho, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture” is being held at “Kobe Municipal Suma Seaside Aquarium” (Suma-ku, Kobe City) until April 16.
The results of the survey, funded by SMASUI, Okayama University!
Since 2010, the park has been providing grants for necessary expenses to organizations and individuals who are engaged in research and activities for the purpose of conservation related to “biodiversity” in the Kinki, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions.
In 2021, the park will provide grants to Okayama University. Mabi-cho, Kurashiki City, the habitat of the “Nagoyadaru maegae,” which is listed as an endangered species IB (on the Ministry of the Environment’s Red List), suffered severe flood damage from heavy rains in July 2018, and since then the species’ population has plummeted, but surveys by Okayama University have shown a significant recovery in its population.

The exhibition introduces the results of the 2022 field survey and the frog’s ecology. The person in charge of the exhibition says, “We hope that visitors will join us and learn about the ecology of the Nagoyadama frog, which survived the floods. <A word from the reporter>
Natural disasters such as floods have a great impact not only on humans but also on the natural world, but I think it is difficult to pay attention to them. I hope that each of us will take responsibility to look at the creatures of nature and protect their ecosystems!
