City official NOTE | The appeal of public bathhouses is introduced in an article on NOTE (external link) |
General public bathhouses (so-called old-fashioned “sento”) are open to everyone because they are useful for the health and hygiene of residents, and the price control ordinance (Imperial Ordinance No. 118 of 1946) has set a maximum bathing fee for each prefecture. However, due to the recent sharp rise in fuel and other costs, the upper limit in Hyogo Prefecture was raised from 450 yen to 490 yen in February 2023.
Kobe City has been supporting the use of public bathhouses by many people through discount programs for people with children and university students, stamp rally projects to visit public bathhouses, and other programs.
Since this will lead to an increase in fees, we have been providing support for the difference of 40 yen since March. As a result, for the time being, users will be able to bathe at the same rates as before.
Member facilities of the Kobe City Federation of Bathhouse Associations have decided not to raise the fee and will keep it at 450 yen for the month of February, as a self-help effort in the absence of support from Kobe City.
