Exhibition Focusing on Chinese Bronze Mirrors and Persian Carpet Designs Hakutsuru Art Museum

The Hakutsuru Art Museum (Higashinada-ku, Kobe) de, which owns more than 1,450 pieces of Japanese and Oriental antiques, including two national treasures (75 pieces) and 22 important cultural properties (39 pieces), is holding the “2023 Spring Exhibition” from March 4. The exhibition will run until June 4.

The main building and the new building will hold exhibitions on the themes of “Chinese Copper Mirrors” and “Modern Persian Medallion Carpets,” respectively, and related events such as lectures and workshops will be held during the exhibition period, in which visitors can freely participate.

The “Chinese Bronze Mirrors” exhibition in the main building features 63 bronze mirrors from China dating from the Tang Dynasty, focusing on “birds and beasts” among the beautiful designs on the backs of mirrors created using a variety of materials and techniques.
The exhibition will focus on the charm of bronze mirrors, ancient artifacts that demonstrate the techniques of raden (mother-of-pearl inlays), heidatsu (flattening), and gimbari (silver-plating).
Carpet Taflish: Western Persia
Meanwhile, “Medallion Carpets of Modern Persia” in the New Wing exhibits 21 pieces based on the theme of “medallion patterns,” the symbolic design of Persian carpets.
The exhibition introduces the characteristics of modern Persian carpets, which feature a variety of patterns, including classical medallions, geometric patterns, and realistic floral patterns that suggest the sophistication of the court workshops. <A word from the reporter>
Opened in 1934 through the efforts of Jihei Kano, the seventh generation Hakutsuru sake brewer, the museum’s building itself is a sight to behold as well as the works in its collection!
