Motomachi Movie Theater to Present Nikkatsu’s 110th Anniversary with Digitally Restored Masterpieces

Motomachi Movie Theater (Chuo-ku, Kobe) will present “Nikkatsu World Selection,” a special screening commemorating Nikkatsu’s 110th anniversary, from May 13 to 26.

This special program will showcase Nikkatsu films that have been selected at international film festivals including Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, as well as highly acclaimed masterpieces that have been screened in more than 50 countries over the past 10 years. Visitors will be able to enjoy a wide variety of films, from period dramas and moving stories to romantic pornography, all of which have been beautifully restored with digital technology.
The lineup of eight films includes the unique hard-boiled “Brand of Murder,” whose “Seijun aesthetics” creates tension and laughter throughout the film; “The Deep Desire of the Gods,” the first color film by Shohei Imamura, a two-time Palme d’Or winner at the Cannes International Film Festival and a mythical epic that was shot on location in Okinawa for a long time; and “The Moon Rises,” a romantic comedy about the delicate emotions of three sisters.
