A colony of about 1,000 plants is at its best earlier than last year at Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden

At the Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden in Nada Ward, Kobe, a colony of about 1,000 plants of “Nikkoukisuge,” bright summer flowers that bring summer to the plateau, is now in full bloom. After the “subalpine zone type,” which is currently in full bloom, can be seen until mid-June, the “highland type,” with approximately 2,000 plants, will begin blooming in late June and can be enjoyed until late July.

Nikkohkisuge (family of silverbeet) is a perennial herb that grows in wet meadows in the subalpine zone of Hokkaido and Honshu (Chubu and northwards). Since it does not grow naturally west of the Kansai region, the sight of it blooming in colonies is said to be very precious.
The flowers open in the morning and close in the evening, but the flowering period lasts for about a month as many flower buds rise on a stem about 70 cm tall and bloom one after another. This year, due to the continued high temperatures, the flowers are at their best about a week earlier than usual.
