About Periodontal Disease
Three-fourths of tooth loss in people over 40 years of age is caused by caries and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease affects the teeth and tooth-supporting tissues (gums and bones), and if left untreated, is a dreadful disease that can lead to tooth loss. It is also closely related to general health and is a risk factor for diabetes, arteriosclerosis, and many other diseases. The disease is painless and progresses without notice, so it is necessary to have regular checkups at the dentist’s office. If you have any of the following symptoms, you are at risk for periodontal disease: “I bleed when I brush my teeth,” “My gums are red and swollen,” “My gums have become thin,” and “I have bad breath.
