In addition to the west side expansion of Port Island PC-18, the Port of Kobe is currently working with the government and Hanshin International Port Corporation on the Port Island (Phase 2) South Pier PC-13 to 17 Container Terminal to accommodate increasingly larger container ships. Ltd. are currently undergoing construction to expand and enhance the functions of the terminal, aiming for completion in FY2025, in order to build a highly productive terminal that can accommodate increasingly larger container vessels, improve transshipment convenience for ocean and domestic container cargo, and provide berth windows more flexibly.
The current users of Port Island (Phase 2) South Wharf (PC-13 to 17), the users of Rokko Island (RC-4 and 5), and Hanshin International Port Co. After the expansion, the terminal will be the largest in western Japan, handling approximately 40% of the Port of Kobe’s foreign trade containers.
We will continue to work with the government and Hanshin International Port Co., Ltd. to make the terminal a highly convenient container terminal for the expansion of the Port of Kobe’s port capacity.
Outline of the terminal (PCs 13-17) after completion of construction
- Zero-emission RTGs*1 that can be converted to hydrogen fuel cells, electric RTGs, renewable energy (solar panels), and CONPAS*2 are planned to be installed, making the terminal one of the largest in western Japan in terms of environmental friendliness.
- The terminal will be equipped with logistics facilities with overhead cranes capable of handling large cargoes.

*1 Abbreviation for “Rubber Tired Gantry crane”. A tire-type gantry crane is one of the cargo handling machines used at container terminals, and is used to transport containers within the terminal.
2 Abbreviation for Container Fast Pass, a new port information system. This system was developed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to improve the efficiency and productivity of container logistics by reducing congestion in front of container terminal gates and shortening the time container trailers spend at terminals.
