The “Youshouan” in Sumiyoshi, Higashinada-ku, Kobe, is a historical building known as the former residence of Junichiro Tanizaki, a great writer associated with Kobe. On August 19 and 20, “Noryo Yuso (Cool Evening)”, an event where visitors can spend a moment at dusk at Iyusho-an, will be held. The event is free of charge and reservations are not required.
The house is also known as “Hoso-Yuki’s House” because the great writer Junichiro Tanizaki lived there from 1936 to 1943 and wrote his novel “Hoso-Yuki” (The Hoso-Snow) there, using Mrs. Matsuko and her sisters as models.
The hermitage, which still retains the atmosphere of “Hosoyuki,” is also home to the Tanizaki Collection, a collection of Tanizaki’s books and reference materials, where citizens and visitors can browse through the works of Junichiro Tanizaki to become familiar with the world of Tanizaki’s literature.
During the event, the regular opening hours (10:00-16:00) will be extended, and visitors will be able to see the illumination of the garden and the soft indirect lighting of the parlor, which are not usually seen in the museum.
Visitors wearing yukata (light cotton kimono) will be able to take pictures with a tasteful atmosphere. Visitors will also receive an original fan as a gift (distribution will end when all the fans are gone). For details, please visit the website.
<A word from the reporter:
“Hosoyuki” is my favorite work. The setting was Senba, and I was thrilled to learn that the model for the play was in Kobe. This event is full of atmosphere and will allow us to follow in the footsteps of Junichiro Tanizaki.
