Creator of Animation Art: The New Yamamoto at Kobe Fashion Museum

A special exhibition, “Creator of Animation Art: Fumio Yamamoto the New Yamamoto, THE MEMORIAL,” will be held at Kobe Fashion Museum in Higashinada-ku, Kobe from April 13, 2012. The exhibition will run until June 16.

The exhibition will feature the work of Nizo Yamamoto, one of the most famous art directors in the Japanese animation world. The exhibition honors the achievements of Mr. Yamamoto, who passed away in August of last year.

Mr. Yamamoto has worked as an art director for nationally famous animation films such as “Laputa: Castle in the Sky,” “Grave of the Fireflies,” “Princess Mononoke,” etc. With his solid screen composition and exquisite detailing, he has enhanced the visual beauty of animation, depicting a wide range of expressions from imaginary other worlds to real life spaces and natural scenery. The beauty of the animated images was enhanced.

In the exhibition hall, about 250 exhibits were introduced, including hand-drawn backgrounds, image boards, and art settings of famous movies, as well as his manga “Kanjigashiro,” which he was drawing until just before his death. In particular, “Grave of the Fireflies,” which Mr. Yamamoto worked on, is set in Kobe, and some of his works are being exhibited specially because of this connection.

In Kobe, which has a deep connection for Erzo Yamamoto, you can enjoy his masterpieces of background art full of poetic sentiment, which supported the late directors Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki and pushed Japanese animation into the world-class culture.
