From Maze Games to Castle Illustrations: The World of Mototaro Kagawa’s Works
Summer Special Exhibition at Akashi City Museum of Art From Maze Play to Castle Illustration – The World of Mototaro Kagawa’s Works will be held at the Akashi City Cultural Museum from July 13 (Sat) to September 1 (Sun), 2024!
Mototaro Kagawa was absorbed in playing with mazes made by his father when he was a child. He was fascinated by the maze-like structure of Japanese castles, which made it difficult to reach the castle tower, which led him to visit castles and draw castles himself, and eventually to become an illustrator of restored castles representing Japan. His illustrations of castles are based on Japanese painting techniques, but are also based on careful period research and diligent fieldwork, and they beautifully bring to life visual images of castles that have now been lost. This exhibition traces the history of Mototaro Kagawa, whose interest in castles was sparked by playing with them, and allows children and adults alike to enjoy viewing his detailed and beautiful castle illustrations of Akashi Castle and other castles around Japan while playing with cardboard mazes and search pictures.
