On August 23, “Art & Jizo Bon Festival” will be held in “Rokumamichi Shopping Street” in Nagata Ward, Kobe City.
The “Jizo-bon” is a scene of the downtown area, but it has been difficult to continue nationwide due to a lack of bearers and funds, and the Rokumamichi 3- and 4-chome shopping streets have not been able to continue the tradition outwardly for 4 to 5 years.
The area holds the “Downtown Art Festival” in the fall, an event that features contemporary art exhibits and performances, and this time, with the cooperation of the artists participating in the event, original lanterns were created. In addition, Jizo cushions and costumes were made with the cooperation of local residents. They will be able to change into new clothes on the day of the event.
It is said that it is good to visit seven Jizo statues in the area (for good health). On the day of the event, in addition to the beautiful lanterns, art lanterns made with the artists will be hung in the Rokumamichi 3-chome shopping street, providing an unusual sight. In addition, curry and drinks for children and “art octopus crackers” made by the artists will be served.
The person in charge of the festival says, “The Jizo Bon Festival in Rokumamichi 3-chome Shopping Street will be revived for the first time in five years. We will create a downtown scene with the local community that both children and their parents will remember. Please come and see it!
<A word from the reporter>
It made me feel that the whole community is working together to protect the lives of children by preserving and passing on these traditions. I hope such efforts will be made in shopping districts in other regions as well!
