Press Release (May 10, 2023)
Coastal Disaster Prevention Division, Port and Harbor Department
In order to ensure the safety and security of its citizens, Kobe City has been conducting annual drills for closing tide gates and other facilities before the typhoon season, in addition to implementing hardware measures such as remote operation of tide gates and reinforcement of seawalls with more resilient structures, to prevent storm surge and tsunami.
In order to ensure safe, reliable, and speedy closure, this year we will conduct the following closure drills for tide gates, including remote operation, which will be partially operational from January 2020.
The
training
will be held
at
Meriken Park on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, from 4:00 p.m., using tablets to remotely operate tide
gates
. A remote-controlled closing drill will be held at Meriken Park on May 16, 2023 (Tuesday) at 16:00.
In
March 2023, we completed our countermeasures against tsunamis (the largest class of tsunamis) that could be caused by a “Nankai Trough Earthquake,” which has a low probability of occurring once every 1,000 years, but would cause extensive damage if it were to occur.
As a further effort, the remote operation of tide gates is underway for completion in FY2024.
