in Sand –
Akashi City Museum of Art will hold a special summer exhibition “Piece of Souzo – The Story of Shin Tanakashin Spun in Sand“ from July 19, 2025 (Sat) to September 7, 2025 (Sun) at the Akashi City Museum of Art . The exhibition will be held at the Akashi City Culture Museum from July 19 (Sat) to September 7 (Sun), 2025!

Shin Tanaka is a painter and picture book artist who has a studio in Akashi, and uses Akashi sea sand as the base of his paintings. This exhibition commemorates the 20th anniversary of his activities, and will feature original picture book drawings, paintings, and three-dimensional works from his early to latest works.
Sea sand contains rocks and sand brought from the mountains, shells and pieces of coral nurtured in the sea, as if it contains the earth itself” (Shin Tanaka).
Shin Tanaka has established a warm and enveloping style of painting with his unique technique of using ocean sand as a base for his paintings. While working on exhibitions and murals in Japan and abroad as a painter, he has also published many picture books as a picture book artist that gently touch the hearts of adults and children of all ages.
This exhibition consists of “pieces” of stories that Shin Tanaka has spun. Following the chapters “Fragments of Heart,” “Fragments of Ehon,” and “Fragments of Creation,” in which visitors can learn about the thoughts and creative secrets behind his works, the final chapter, “Fragments for Everyone,” allows visitors to become one of the weavers of the stories themselves. Feelings, words that remain in the hearts of the visitors, and their expanding imaginations will each become a “piece” of a new story.
At the venue, there will be interactive works by plaplax, an art unit that also handles video production and exhibition design, as well as works that can be touched and enjoyed, and a space where visitors can relax and read picture books. Both adults and children can experience the world of Shin Tanaka at this exhibition.
–The story of Shin Tanaka is spun by sand that holds the memories of the earth and an overflowing imagination.
What “pieces” will you find in this exhibition?
