Rediscover the history and charm of the city by watching films shot on location in Kobe at Kobe Film Archive

On July 27 and 28, the Kobe Film Archive in Kobe’s Nagata Ward will hold the Shinnagata Film Lecture “The Crimson Sea is Calling”.

This is the sixth in a series of lectures in which participants will watch films featuring the city of Kobe and rediscover the city’s history and charms.

This time, we pick up “Makka na Umi ga Yomiteruze” (released in 1965), the second film starring Tetsuya Watari, an actor from Hyogo Prefecture. Set to the backdrop of Tetsuya Watari’s debut song, “Pure Love Blues,” the film tells a story of brotherly love and male friendship.

The film was shot on location at many places in Kobe City, including Kobe Port, inside the Mitsubishi Warehouse at Takahama Quay, Benten-cho, Ikuta-ku, Kaigan-dori Kyobashi, Ikuta-ku, the alley beside Mitsui Toshin Warehouse at Kobe Port, in front of the Municipal Longshoremen’s Tsumesho, Kobe Port Third Jetty, and Kobe Port Joint Government Building, Kaigan-dori, Ikuta-ku.

On July 27, a lecture “Exploring filming locations” was given by photographer Taichi Korikawa, and a recording of the lecture will be broadcast on July 28.
