On February 2nd, ‘Setsubun Matsuri’ and ‘Koshiki Tsuina Shiki’, designated as an important intangible folk cultural asset by the prefecture, will be held at Nagata Shrine (Nagata-ku, Kobe City). The Setsubun-Sai will be held from 12:30 p.m., and the Koshiki Tsuina Ceremony will be held from 1:30 p.m. to around 6:00 p.m.
The ritual of Tsuina Ceremony has been held since the Muromachi period (1336-1573), to drive away demons and plague gods. The seven ogres who act as messengers of the gods perform the ritual after having practiced the ritual by covering themselves with well water many times since the day before, and after having purified themselves on the Suma beach in the early morning of the day of the ritual.
The worshippers are purified by covering themselves with the ashes of the torches held by the ogres, and then hang the burning remains of the torches at the entrance of their houses to pray for good health, safety in the home, and peace and tranquility throughout the year.
In addition, miniature torches and rice cake flowers will be sold at the festival.
