Kobe City: Former Kannon Residence

Overview

The former Kushoku Residence was built around 1936 at the foot of a mountain in the former Sumiyoshi Village (now part of Higashinada Ward) as the home of Inui Shinji, who founded Inui Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.
The architect was Setsu Watanabe, a renowned master builder. While based on a Western style, the building skillfully blends Japanese and Western styles, and incorporates delicate design into a stately structure.
The main house, storehouse, and garden, which retain their original appearance, are extremely valuable. The entire building, including the gate and walls, is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by Kobe City (*1), and the garden, with some exceptions, is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by Kobe City (*2).

Traffic Information

• 10 minutes walk northeast from Hankyu Mikage Station
• From Hanshin Mikage Station or JR Sumiyoshi Station, take city bus 38 bound for
  Uzumoridai, alight at Hakutsuru Bijutsukan-mae and walk southwest for about 2 minutes.
