In May, “2023 Spring Festival (Danjiri parade)” is held in Higashinada Ward, Kobe City.

This is a major spring event in Higashinada Ward, where a total of 32 danjiri (floats) parade through the streets with musical accompaniment in four districts: Motoyama, Honjo/Uozaki, Sumiyoshi, and Mikage. The parade schedule differs from district to district.

The danjiri of Higashinada is called “Hiki-Danjiri,” which is pulled relatively slowly, in contrast to Kishiwada Danjiri (Osaka), which is a fierce “carrier Danjiri.” It is characterized by its gorgeous “Kobe-type” chitai, decorated with decorative curtains, Yamagata lanterns, and outer goma (sesame). There are many highlights of the parade, such as children pulling the “pulling rope” with all their might, and the powerful “Neriawase,” in which the pullers rotate the danjiri with their breaths in unison!

With last October’s Danjiri parade commemorating the 70th anniversary of Higashinada Ward’s establishment fresh in my memory, I was surprised to hear that it was already that time of the year! I was surprised (laugh). Now that we have so many opportunities to hear gloomy news, I would like to hear the sounds of festival music and lively shouts to lift our spirits…♪
