The Kobe Central Wholesale Market East in Fukaehama (Higashinada-ku, Kobe) holds a “Shopping Day and Yokocho Festival” on the fourth Saturday of odd-numbered months. This month’s event will be held on May 25.

At the “Shopping Day” held from 8:30 a.m., visitors can experience shopping at the wholesale market, which is normally closed to the general public. Three to four “fruit stores” and four to five “fresh fish stores” gather to sell melons and watermelons that are available this time of year. In addition, visitors can purchase scallops, cod roe, and other items at the always popular “frozen food” sales.

The person in charge of the event sends a message, “This time we are selling delicious takikomi-gohan ingredients (shrimp, clams, and scallops) at a discount, so please keep an eye out.

The event is scheduled to run until 10:30 a.m., but visitors are encouraged to come early as the items will run out before the end of the day. Shopping is by cash only. Credit cards and electronic money are not accepted.

The “Yokocho Festival” will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and will include a stamp rally (big lottery) and a quiz rally.

In the stamp rally, one stamp is stamped for every 500 yen worth of purchases at related business establishments (up to two stamps can be stamped at the same establishment). If you collect six stamps, you can participate in a lottery and win a gift certificate (5,000 yen), rice, etc., which can be used at the related business office’s store.

In the quiz rally, a total of 10 quiz questions will be posted at the entrance of each affiliated business location. If you answer 10 questions correctly, you can redeem a juice or coffee.
