From July 8 to 21, Motomachi Cinema (Chuo-ku, Kobe) will screen a documentary film, “Our Philosophy Class,” based on a philosophy class at Holy Cross Primary School for Boys in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK.

To commemorate the release of the film, Motomachi Cinema will hold various events in collaboration with Kobe facilities, including a collaborative project from July 1 to 30 at the Kobe City Hyogo Library (Hyogo Ward, Kobe City), where the “Wall of Peace,” or separation wall, exists due to the conflict in Northern Ireland, and a two-year program at a boys’ elementary school that offers philosophy classes in Belfast. The exhibition will feature books selected from the viewpoints of philosophy and education related to this work, which closely follows a boys’ elementary school in Belfast for two years that has adopted a philosophy class. The books on display will be available for loan.

In addition, on July 8 and 9, a “philosophy workshop” will be held in cooperation with “Machi Labo” (Chuo Ward, Kobe City) on the 4th floor of Kobe Machizukuri Kaikan. (Reservations required.) Participants can actually experience the P4C (Philosophy for Children) activities that take place in the film.

On the 8th, an interactive philosophy class will be held in the theater after the screening of the film, with opinions projected on the screen. On the 9th, after the screening, the class will move to the Machi Labo, where small groups of students can learn in-depth using slides that are used in high school classes. Yufuko Masuda, a teacher of geography, history, and civics at Maiko High School in Hyogo Prefecture, who has been practicing P4C in Kobe, will participate in both events.

In addition, a “Philosophy Café” will be held on July 16, where participants can share their impressions of the film and discuss its content in depth. （The facilitator will be Hideki Mori, a graduate student at Hyogo University of Teacher Education who has been practicing philosophical dialogue, and small groups of participants will experience a time to think together.

The smiling yet solemn dialogue between Principal Kevin and his students is reminiscent of Nicolas Philibert’s “My Favorite Teacher,” a remarkable film that has won many awards at film festivals in Japan and abroad!
