The exhibition “60 years after his death, Western-style painter Aizo Tsuji: Landscapes, Customs, and Illustrations” is being held at the Otani Memorial Museum of Art in Nishinomiya City from May 2. The exhibition will run until July 15.
This retrospective exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of the death of Aizo Tsuji, a Western-style painter who was born in Osaka and lived in Nishinomiya. In 1928, Aizo Tsuji moved to a new house in Nishinomiya City and established the Kohzono Western-style painting studio near the museum. In 1973, soon after the museum opened, he became the first local artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the museum.
The exhibition consists of four chapters, the first of which introduces oil landscapes. Visitors can view the oil paintings depicting Ieshima Island off the coast of Himeji and other landscapes in the Kinki region, comparing them with photographs of original sketches (owned by the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art). The catalogue of the exhibition also includes a summary of the artist’s sketching trips, which were revealed based on the information in the sketches.
The second section of the exhibition features a series of ink paintings of the Nishinomiya and Kobe area from about 100 years ago when Aizo Tsuji moved to Nishinomiya, as well as a glass painting of a prewar Osaka scene from his last year of life. Chapter 3 focuses on his illustration work, from serialized newspaper novels to the children’s picture book magazine “Kodomo Asahi,” which had not received much attention until now. Chapter 4 features artists who were associated with Aizo Tsuji, including Rinsaku Akamatsu, Ryuzaburo Umehara, and Shintaro Suzuki. A total of 130 works will be on display, providing a complete picture of Aizo Tsuji.

This is an exhibition of painters closely associated with Nishinomiya City. With the cooperation of the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art, the exhibition alongside panels of sketches can only be seen here. You may be able to see a side of Nishinomiya and Hyogo Prefecture that you never knew existed.
