Press Release (June 25, 2024)
Resource Recycling Division, Environment Bureau
The city, together with Kobe Women’s Junior College, will promote SDGs learning for students using the “Kobe Kiello. Kiello is a type of compost that uses microorganisms in the soil to decompose food waste, and can be easily started with soil and a container. The use of composting has been selected as one of the “Zero Carbon Action 30” by the Ministry of the Environment.

Students of the Department of Early Childhood Education will work on the production of “Kiero Karuta” so that children can learn about the SDGs in a fun

way from an early age.

In the production process, the Environmental Bureau will give a class on the SDGs from the perspective of environmental issues and waste reduction. Students will deepen their understanding of waste reduction and resource recycling through this class and the production of the “Quiero karuta”.
The original “Kiero karuta” is intended to be a fun way to learn about “Kiero” even for young children who cannot read yet, and the finished product will actually be used in nursery schools and kindergartens.

2. “Kobe Kiello” practical training

Taking advantage of the opportunity of the delivery class, the university will actually use the “Kiello” to reduce food waste by using cooking practice residues from the Department of Food and Nutrition. In addition, at Shinjo Nakayamate Nursery School and Takakuradai Kindergarten, students will observe how food waste disappears with “Kiello” using meal residues prior to learning about “Kiello” with “Kiello karuta”.
