The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History (Himeji City) is holding a special exhibition “Communicating and Informing about the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake: Information and Communications in the 1990s” from January 11 to March 16, 2011.
Although the museum has previously held exhibitions on disaster history and damaged cultural properties, this is the first time it has held an exhibition on the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
From the viewpoint of “Information and Communication,” the exhibition displays materials from the time of the earthquake that have been preserved to this day by the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution, the Kobe University Library Earthquake Collection, and citizen volunteer groups and individuals.

The exhibition is divided into four sections: “Information and Communications in the 1990s,” “Communicating the Disaster Area,” “Communicating Necessary Information,” and “Communicating Experiences. In the “Communicating Experiences” section, visitors can view poems, paintings, photographs, narratives, and various other forms of recordings of the scenes people themselves experienced and saw after the earthquake.
On February 22 and March 16, “Exhibition Explanation” will be held, and on March 8, “Historical Journey: Tracing the Disaster History of Sannomiya and Motomachi Area” and other related events will be held. Some events require advance registration, so please check the official website for details.
<A word from the reporter>
Students and faculty members of Kobe University’s Graduate School of Humanities and Faculty of Letters have been working together to prepare for this exhibition. Some of the materials to be exhibited were selected by the students and explanatory texts were written by them, so we may learn something new, such as what to focus on from the viewpoint of young people who did not experience the earthquake.
