How many years will it be before we see flowers next? A precious flower is about to bloom at Hotel Plaza

On the 11th floor of the Hotel Plaza Kobe in Higashinada Ward, Kobe City, a flower that is said to bloom only once every few decades, the “agave lily,” is showing signs of blooming. The flower stalks have now begun to grow 5.5 meters, and this is the first time since the opening of the hotel that they have reached such a state.

The “agave” is a succulent plant native to Central and South America, and its name comes from its “dragon’s tongue”-shaped leaves. It is called “century plant” in English because it blooms and dies only once in a century (100 years), but in Japan, it often blooms once every 30 to 50 years.

The “century plant” at Hotel Plaza Kobe was planted by the staff at the time of its opening with the wish that “Hotel Plaza Kobe will be in business for 100 years. This year marks 26 years since its opening, and it began to grow rapidly about two months ago.

To commemorate this event, the hotel is currently holding a “Predict the Date of Full Bloom Campaign” on its official Instagram page. One lucky person who guesses the date of full bloom will win a pair of Hotel Plaza Kobe accommodation tickets.

After the blooming, the executive chef will process the “agave” into a powder, and the winner will receive a pair of hotel room tickets. The chef will also present the powdered powder as a “good-luck charm” with the wish that the flower will stay healthy until it reaches 100 years old (limited time and limited quantity).

The orchid is planted on the 11th floor of the hotel and is open to the public. Non-guests are free to view it from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. (It may not be viewed during weddings and private events.)
