We visited “Avel Cafe” (Nagata-ku, Kobe), a cafe that just opened in May this year. It is open from 8:00 a.m., so it is a perfect place for morning use.
Located between a quiet residential area and a large park called Nishidairenike Park, it is frequented by neighbors in the morning and by nearby university students around 3 pm.
The restaurant has a chic and modern interior with one table and a counter for two people.
The terrace seating is also available on sunny days. Among the many items on the menu, I ordered the “Pancake Set” for this morning.
Pancake Set” with coffee or tea: 1,380 yen
One plate of salad with deep dressing and avocado with savory nuts. Crispy bacon and a fried egg are also placed on top.
The pancakes are served with honey and a lot of butter, so you can go ahead and eat them with a robust flavor change. The portions are generous, and it is nice to be able to get a good meal in the morning. The set drink is coffee or tea, served in a large mug with a cute logo.
The showcase in the restaurant is lined with delicious-looking cakes and pastries, and I was tempted to order more after my meal. All of these items are set at affordable prices, which shows the concern for students.
There is a wide variety of non-morning items on the menu, including healthy sandwiches and stylish lattes that are popular with the older crowd. They start making sandwiches and bagels only after receiving orders, as they want their food to be “fresh and ready to eat.”
They also have a back menu of food and drinks that are only introduced on their Instagram, so be sure to check it out.
The manager, Mr. Yoshioka, who runs the restaurant at the young age of 25, says, “I make my menu with health in mind and create what I want to eat. After quitting his job as an office worker, he immediately decided to start a restaurant in this town.
The name “Avel” means “new” or “joy” in Latin, and it expresses Mr. Yoshioka’s desire to “create something new and delight the customers who come to the store.
After enjoying the morning breakfast, I ordered more “An Butter Scone” and “Black Sesame Latte”. The moist scone, sweet butter, and light red bean paste went so well together that I could eat as many as I wanted. The black sesame latte, with its savory flavor and gentle sweetness, is delicious even on a hot day.
Sweets and sandwiches are also available for takeout, so why not stop by the store before heading out?
