The “40th Anniversary Exhibition: Nikko’s Colors and Metalwork – Unlocking the Mystery of the Beauty of Shrines and Temples” is being held at the 1st floor hall of the Takenaka Carpenter’s Tools Museum in Chuo-ku, Kobe, from September 14, 2012. The exhibition will run until December 15.
The World Heritage Site “Shrines and Temples of Nikko” are said to be a group of works by the genius artists representing Japan in the 17th century, and were created using the highest level of construction technology of the time. The overwhelming splendor and splendor of the architectural decorations of Nikko Toshogu Shrine and other shrines have been passed down to the next generation by masters who have repeatedly preserved and repaired them, ensuring that traditional techniques have been passed down to the next generation.
This exhibition focuses on the “coloring” and “metalwork,” two of the “traditional architectural craftsmanship” techniques registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, that decorate the shrines and temples of Nikko and highlight their unparalleled splendor.

During the period, there will be demonstrations of “Nikko’s coloring and lacquer foiling,” a hands-on class on “painting floral patterns using traditional coloring techniques,” a workshop on “making bowls with Joboji-nuri” and a workshop on “making straps with Joboji-nuri.
