The Hankyu Kobe Main Line started operation between Umeda and Kamitsutsui in 1920, and in 1936, the line was elevated to Kobe Sannomiya. The “Kobe City Line Viaduct” was recognized as a civil engineering structure of historical value in 2020 as a “Civil Engineering Heritage of Japan” by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE). In this area, creators have been moving in for about 10 years, opening studios, galleries, ateliers, sports gyms, and dance studios.
This event was one of the programs in the “Kobe Modern Architecture Festival 2024,” and was held for the first time after Corona. Guided tours were held in the morning and afternoon. Starting from Hankyu Kasuganomichi Station, participants toured 10 locations up to Hankyu Oji Koen Station, where they received explanations from residents.
Participants commented that they were able to see the elevated area from a new perspective and that they would like to continue to explore the town with interest. Yurie Sakamoto, who served as the tour guide, said, “I was able to enjoy the elevated railway tracks that I usually pass by with the participants. We would like to offer this tour to local elementary and junior high school students in the future.
