A special exhibition of a whole-body skeletal specimen of a “Megamouth Shark” will be held at Kobe City Suma Seaside Aquarium (Suma-ku, Kobe) from December 9.
The “world’s first” whole-body skeletal specimen, which is usually displayed at Kamogawa Sea World, can be viewed for a limited time only.
Megamouth Shark
Megamouth sharks are large sharks that can grow up to 7 meters in length. Because of this, its ecology is still a mystery, and it is called a “phantom shark”!
Kazuhiro Nakaya, Professor Emeritus, Hokkaido University
On December 11, during the exhibition period, a special lecture by Professor Emeritus Kazuhiro Nakaya of Hokkaido University, who is known as “Professor Samae” for his involvement in the dissection of megamouth sharks, will be held under the title “Teach us, Professor Nakaya! The Mysterious Ecology of Megamouth Sharks” by Professor Emeritus Kazuhiro Nakatani of Hokkaido University, nicknamed “Dr. Sakame,” will also be held. <A word from the reporter:
7 meters long…! Sea creatures are on a different scale! The fact that it is exquisitely ugly and cute is also a high point (laughs). I’d love to see them swimming someday!
