The Suma papier-mâché exhibition by Takenori Yoshioka, who has been creating Kobe Suma papier-mâché, is being held at the Kawanishi City Museum of Art. The period is until January 22 next year.
Suma papier-mâché is a unique papier-mâché creation that was born in Suma in 1984, after Takenori Yoshioka became fascinated by the Daruma papier-mâché sold in his hometown of Kobe. The papier-mâché is characterized by its soft curves and shapes, including an amabie for good health, a rabbit for next year’s zodiac sign, a beckoning cat, and a Kobe Daruma doll.
The papier-mâché is made by pasting Japanese paper over clay molds, and since Japanese paper made before the Meiji era (1868-1912) has a good glue, Mr. Yoshioka continues to make papier-mâché using old books he finds in bookstores.
This was the fifth exhibition of this kind, and those who viewed the works commented, “The gentle appearance of the papier-mâché pieces warmed my heart. The world is still facing various restrictions due to the Corona disaster, but seeing the papier-mâché works, I think I will be able to welcome a good new year”. <A word from the reporter> A
total of 780 works by Mr. Yoshioka are on display, ranging from Christmas and hina dolls to those based on Suma’s old tales and the Genpei battle. Please be healed by the many dusty and cute “Suma papier-mâché” works. In addition, 15 prints by Mr. Yoshioka’s wife, Haruko, which depict the process of papier-mâché making in a story, are also on display!
