January 17, 2023 will mark 28 years since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and the KOBE Tonbo Dama Museum (Chuo-ku, Kobe) will hold the “1.17 Lights of Hope Tonbo Dama Making Experience” again this year. The event will run from January 8 to 31.
1.17 Light of Hope” in Higashi Yuenchi (Chuo-ku, Kobe)
This event has been held every year since 2007. Visitors can experience making tonbo dama beads after the “1.17 Lantern of Hope” is lit in Higashi Yuenchi as a symbol of the repose of the souls of the victims of the earthquake.
Making dragonfly beads
Mr. Miyamoto, the director of the museum, opened the museum in 2005, the 10th anniversary of the earthquake, after his restaurant was completely destroyed by the disaster.
In the same year, the museum held the “International Lampwork Festa,” inviting artists from Japan and abroad, and demonstrated the use of “1.17 Lamps of Hope.
As an initiative unique to a glass museum that has used lamps for fire since ancient times, “Lampwork,” the museum will convey to visitors the meaning entrusted in the lamps through the experience, and weave “thoughts of repose and rebirth. “We will weave the ‘spirit of repose and rebirth’ by conveying the meaning of the lights to visitors through their experience.
In the past, we have had visitors who lost their mothers in the earthquake and were delighted when they made dragonfly beads from the experience into necklaces that they could always wear as a “reminder to their mothers. Miyamoto hopes that even those who did not experience the earthquake will remember the great earthquake that occurred 28 years ago and raise their awareness of disaster prevention and disaster mitigation.
For each tonbo dama made during the experience, 100 yen will be donated to the NPO Hanshin-Awaji Great Hanshin Earthquake “1.17 Lights of Hope” (HANDS). <The
works created at the “International Lampwork Festa” demonstration are on permanent display at the museum.
Why don’t you feel the light of life from the past to those of us living in the future?
