Maija Kauhanen” One Woman Orchestra will be held at Kobe Xebec Hall (Chuo-ku, Kobe) on December 17. Tickets are now on sale.
Maija Kauhanen is a Finnish traditional instrumentalist, kantele player, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and talented composer and lyricist. Her style of performing her own music as a “one-woman orchestra,” singing while simultaneously playing the kantele and percussion, creates a unique soundscape and a groove that draws the audience in.
Maija’s “one-woman orchestra” style has been internationally acclaimed, and she has just received the Nordic Council Music Prize 2023, the highest honor awarded to Nordic musicians.
For this performance only, Finnish sweets “Salmiakki” (said to be the world’s worst candy) or “Geisha Chocolate” (popular milk chocolate in Finland) will be presented at the door.
A kantele workshop with Maija as instructor will be held from 1:00 p.m. on the day of the event (for a fee). Bring your own canteré and make a reservation in advance.

This is the first time I have heard of a musical instrument called a kantele. An ancient instrument used to play folk music, through Maya’s playing, its unique sound and historical background have become known to many people.
