Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art” in Nada-ku, Kobe, will hold the exhibition “Tadanori Yokoo: Y-jijiro” from January 27 to May 6. ★Y-junction” will be held at the “Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art” in Nada Ward, Kobe, from January 27 through May 6.
Inspired by a strobe photograph Yokoo took of a three-way street at night in his hometown of Nishiwaki in 2000, this special exhibition explores the appeal of the “Y-jijiro” series. The exhibition will feature early works (2000-2005) and new recent works (2016-), which are the starting point of the series.
Black Hole N City-I, 2000, Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo
This series was titled “Black Hole N City” at the time of publication. At the time of its creation, Yokoo had a strong interest in “Nishiwaki by night,” and repeatedly went out at night to report on the area. One time, when he photographed and developed the film with a lens (instant camera) at a memorable location, the building in the center, where the strobe light reached, was blown out, while the road dividing the left and right sides blended into the darkness, He was shocked to see the familiar landscape transformed into an alien landscape.
Rotating House, 2018, artist’s collection (on deposit at Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art)
In the beginning, many of the works in the “Y-junction” series focused on the contrast of light and shadow, but after he began to use photographs taken by others, he began to produce works with vivid colors.
In recent years, Yokoo has taken a new turn, creating works that incorporate the “memory of war” and the ancient Mesopotamian king “Gilgamesh” in his mind. Enjoying these changes in theme and style is perhaps one of the most enjoyable aspects of the exhibition.
<A word from the reporter:
The exhibition was originally scheduled to be held in FY2020 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series, but was continually postponed due to the Corona disaster. Many art fans may have been waiting for this exhibition for a long time!
