. About
the
Former Kushan Residence
Overview
The
former Kushan Residence was built around 1936 at the foot of a mountain in the former Sumiyoshi Village (now part of Higashinada Ward) as the home of Inui Shinji, the founder of Inui Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.
The architect was Setsu Watanabe, a renowned master builder. While based on a Western style, the building skillfully blends Japanese and Western styles, and incorporates delicate design into a stately structure.
The main house, storehouse, and garden, which still retain their original appearance, are extremely valuable. The entire building, including the gate and walls, is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by the City of Kobe, and the garden, with some exceptions, is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by the City of Kobe.
