A curry event, “Introduction to Kobe Curry Studies,” was held at Futaba Gakusya (7 Futaba-cho, Nagata-ku, Kobe) on August 6.
Tasting different genres of curry
The event was co-hosted by the Kobe Student Curry Coalition and omochi, which conducts workshops on food education. The Kobe Student Curry Coalition was formed by curry lovers from five universities in the city: Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, Kobe Gakuin University, Kobe University, Konan University, and University of Hyogo. This was the second time the event was held.
On the day of the event, after learning about the history of Kobe and curry, participants tasted several kinds of curry of different genres without giving their names. The participants guessed the type of curry based on the characteristics of each. The tasting included Kobe Haochi Curry (with pork cubes), an original curry from Shoin Women’s College, which won the “Takarazuka Curry Grand Prix 2023. One participant commented, “It is interesting that there are so many different flavors within the curry category.
Mr. Oba, a member of the organization and president of the Kobe City University of Foreign Studies Curry Club, said, “Kobe, with its settlement area, Chinatown, and Indian community, has nurtured a unique curry culture that cannot be found in any other region. We hope that this event will help people of all ages to understand that Kobe is a city of curry and discover a new side of Kobe,” he said.
