Kobe Shinkaichi-Kirakukan (Hyogo Ward, Kobe City) will host “Two Weeks of Travel with Rakugo,” an event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the JR West Kobe-Osaka Railway from September 9 to 22.
As the means of transportation changed from palanquin in the Edo period to rickshaw in the Meiji period and then to railroad, the way to enjoy traveling also changes. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the world of the old days, when time was slower, or laugh so much that you don’t have time to immerse yourself, you can enjoy “travel in the old days” through rakugo.
The first week, from September 9 to 15, is “Hyogo Prefecture Residents’ Week supported by JR West. Rakugo performers such as Shofukutei Tsurube and Katsura Ayame, who live between Kobe and Osaka and hail from Hyogo Prefecture, will gather for this event. They will also perform local stories!
The second week, from September 16 to 22, is titled “Let’s Travel with Rakugo supported by JR West,” with Shunsuke Katsura and Jyanzaburo Katsura, who will perform each day, and others performing a story about “travel” from a wide variety of Rakugo. The final day will be “East Travel Relay Rakugo Day,” with all performances featuring “travel stories.
As a special gift for visitors, a commemorative novelty (a clear file and a sticker with a headmark sticker) will be offered to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Kobe-Osaka railroad line.
<Report by the person in charge>
Why don’t you listen to rakugo stories and think back to the journeys of the past? Please look forward to the splendid lineup of faces!
<Reporter’s word>
The themes are “local Hyogo” and “travel,” so even rakugo beginners may find it easy to understand!
