On September 16, the “12th Wa no Shirabe,” a performance to enjoy the charm of musical instruments, will be held at the Kinnoh-den Hall of the Minatogawa Shrine (Chuo Ward, Kobe City). Tickets must be purchased in advance to attend the performance.
The performance will feature “Uchitomogode,” a Noh play that has been handed down only in the Kongo school. The Shite will be performed by Eikin Kongo, the head of the Kongo School, who was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) last year. The piece is full of varied dances, including lion and kagura, and is filled with the charm of the three-beat musical accompaniment that can be seen, heard, and felt.
The performers of the Kanze and Kongo schools of Shite perform “Yashima of the Kanze school” and “Yashima of the Kongo school,” respectively, and the tension of the dances on stage, including the musical accompaniment, is a highlight of the performance. Kyogen also includes musical accompaniment, and this year’s Kyogen will be “Fukunokami” (God of Fortune). Shigeyama Shime, who was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property last year, will perform the piece.

There will be many highlights such as a performance by a musician, a musician only playing the bare accompaniment of a musical instrument, and a flute playing in a continuous line. This is a performance full of musicality that is recommended not only for lovers of Noh, but also for those who are new to Noh. We hope you will enjoy a moment of Japanese music in the fall.

This autumn, enjoy a moment in autumn by experiencing Noh plays full of musicality that even beginners can easily get familiar with.
