Sumadera Temple (Suma Ward, Kobe), known as a famous temple associated with the Genpei period, will hold the “Suma Yaon Music and Buddhist Memorial Service” on October 26, a typical autumn event. Admission is free.
The event is a joint dedication combining Shomyo (Buddhist chanting by Shingon and Tendai sect monks), the music unit “shinsha” led by former Blue Hearts drummer Tetsuya Kajiwara, and performances on the 1-stringed Suma Koto (Japanese harp), where prayers for peace will be offered under the autumn night sky. Also, Kiss FM KOBE sound crew member Koshi Nakano will perform as a “narrator”.
A scene from last year’s event
During the dedication performance, the temple’s chief temple administrator, Yojin Koike, will perform a “special night sound gomaku. Gomagi (500 yen per gomagi) will be available at the temple office, so please apply on-site on the day of the event.
