The izakaya “Shunsai Shunyoku Uozu” (Higashi Nada-ku, Kobe City) is located about a 4-minute walk from Aoki Station on the Hanshin Electric Railway line. It is a popular restaurant that attracts not only locals but also people who go out of their way to visit for its flavor.
The restaurant boasts a large lineup of dishes featuring seasonal fish and vegetables! We interviewed the restaurant to find out more about its charm.
The restaurant will celebrate its 12th year in business this October. The owner, who used to work in Japanese cuisine, opened the restaurant with the desire to “open a restaurant in my hometown, Aoki, where I can enjoy delicious food.
The restaurant is particular about the freshness of its fish, which it purchases daily from the Osaka market. The “Today’s Recommended Menu” changes each time depending on the day’s stock… I was surprised at the variety of dishes on the menu!
With such a large number of recommendations, it is hard to decide what to eat, but the restaurant recommends fish dishes. This time, I had a hamo (Japanese conger eel) dish, which will be in season from now on.
Hamo conger eel with fresh onion and egg” 1,400 yen
The “Hamo no tamago to tamago tamago (hamo and fresh onion with egg),” which is made from the bones of the hamo, has a gentle flavor with the sweetness of fresh onion melting into the broth. The dish is filled with a large number of hamo (conger eel) and is very satisfying! The taste of the fish and the gentle broth soak into your body, making it a refreshing dish even in the coming season.
Tai no Kamahan (rice cooked with two servings of sea bream)” 1,950 yen

On this day, we also decided to try the most popular dish on the restaurant’s regular menu, “tai no kamahan (rice cooked with sea bream). The large sea bream has an outstanding presence! The kamameshi is served once, and then the meat is loosened before being served again.
The sea bream is soft, moist and fluffy. The gentle flavor goes well with other dishes and is a good way to end the meal. The “Tai-meshi Yaki Onigiri,” a grilled rice ball made from this kamahan, is also a popular menu item.
Another major attraction of this restaurant is that you can enjoy a variety of dishes at a very reasonable price, such as the “Recommended Specialty Course” starting at 3,000 yen for a total of 10 dishes, which includes the “tai no kamameshi” introduced this time as the finisher!
Other course menus such as tekuchiri and suppon are also available, and it is great to be able to eat seasonal fish in a course that matches the season (all-you-can-drink is available for an additional 2,000 yen; reservation required the day before). (Reservations are required by the day before.)
On Saturdays and Sundays, there are many families here, and they hope that “customers of all ages can enjoy their signature fish dishes. They serve pike conger in summer and puffer fish in winter! Why not visit this restaurant where you can enjoy various other seasonal ingredients according to the season?
