Having voraciously absorbed a wide range of Eastern and Western thought and literature, Lee developed an interest in contemporary art in the 1960s, and began to produce art in earnest in the late 1960s. Trying to overcome the uncertainty of vision, Lee led a trend known as the “Mono-ha,” which combined and presented natural and man-made materials in a posture of moderation.

The exhibition, the first major retrospective of Lee Ufan’s work to be held in western Japan, will be organized by Lee Ufan himself. The exhibition will bring together representative works, including his early works that questioned visual issues before the “Mono-ha” movement, the “Relation Term” series that changed the concept of sculpture, and highly spiritual paintings that play with tranquil rhythms.

The new works will also be installed outdoors in conjunction with the architecture of the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, designed by Tadao Ando. <This is a
