Hong Kong Film Festival 2022″ will be held at Motomachi Cinema (Chuo-ku, Kobe) from December 10 to 16.
Last year, “Hong Kong Film Festival” was held for the first time in five cities across Japan with the aim of “bringing the diversity and charm of Hong Kong films to more Japanese film fans. This year, 19 films (including shorts) from 7 programs will be screened for the first time in Japan in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nagoya, and Tokyo.
Hong Kong independent filmmaker Rita Hui’s three-hour blockbusters “Landscape Part I” and “Landscape Part II” depict the Occupy movement, anti-government protests, Tiananmen Square rallies, and the Umbrella Movement after 2011, mixing documentary footage with dramas of people from different generations and backgrounds. The lineup includes “Sok Sok,” which depicts the issue of homosexuality among the elderly from a multifaceted viewpoint.
The organizers of the festival stated on the official website, “Through ‘Hong Kong Film Festival 2022’, we will discover unknown talents and learn about the breadth of Hong Kong cinema. We also hope that these films will give you a sense that the changes brought about by the Hong Kong National Security Law and the Corona Disaster have rather expanded the possibilities and richness of Hong Kong cinema”. <
This year, 19 Hong Kong films will be screened, more than last year! Many of the main characters in the films to be screened at this year’s festival have not played leading roles in many of the Hong Kong indie and commercial films introduced to Japan in the past. (Immigrants, old gays, discriminated women, homeless people, artists, people participating in social movements, people arrested at demonstrations, etc…)
