Awajiya, a bento box lunch shop based in Higashinada-ku, Kobe, will release two types of ekiben, “Kobe Stensho Bento” and “Umeda Stensho Bento,” on May 11 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Kobe-Osaka railroad.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Kobe-Osaka railroad on May 11, 1874. Awajiya, as an ekiben shop in the Kobe-Osaka area, has planned a commemorative product to celebrate this milestone, saying, “Let’s make a special ekiben that lets people feel the transition of the times! The product is a special ekiben that will allow visitors to feel the transition of the times.
With the cooperation of West Japan Railway Company (JR West), the company has created two types of makunouchi bento with themes of Kobe and Osaka.
Kobe Stensho Bento: 1,280 yen (tax included)
Kobe Stensho Bento” has a theme of Kobe Station, and the package design was commissioned to Daisuke Aoyama, a bird’s-eye view painter from Kobe. The design is based on “Bird’s-eye View of Kobe Station 1874,” which depicts the first train running out of the first Kobe Station, and was written especially for this product.
The product features Western-style dishes such as beef stew, fried prawns, and chicken nanban, in keeping with Kobe’s early adoption of Western food culture since the opening of its port. The package comes with a bird’s-eye view of Kobe on the front, and a special map on the back that overlays the bird’s-eye view on the current map, making it a fun item to enjoy even after you finish eating.
The theme of the “Umeda Stensho Bento” is Osaka Station, which was called “Umeda Stensho” when it first opened. The package design features a brocade picture of the “first Osaka Station” borrowed from JR West Japan.
Umeda Stensho Bento” 1,280 yen (tax included)
The contents of this makunouchi bento are a wide range of traditional and recent Osaka specialties, such as Senba-ni (mackerel and radish stew), soaked Osaka white radish, and tempura of red ginger, allowing the customer to feel the transition of the times. Each item can be purchased at Awajiya stores, and will also be sold at a temporary kiosk in the concourse at the central exit of JR Sannomiya Station from May 11 to 21 only.
