To ensure the safety and security of its citizens, Kobe City has been conducting an annual drill for closing tide gates before the typhoon season, in addition to implementing hardware measures against storm surge and tsunami such as remote control of tide gates and reinforcement of the sea wall with a more tenacious structure. In order to ensure safe, reliable, and speedy closure, this year we will again conduct a training exercise for the closure of tide gates, including remote operation.

In March 2023, we completed our countermeasures against tsunamis (the largest class of tsunamis) that could be caused by a “Nankai Trough Earthquake,” which has a low probability of occurring once every 1,000 years, but would cause extensive damage if it were to occur. As a further effort, the remote operation of the seawalls is underway with completion scheduled for FY2024.
